Energy Audit

Students take the lead in investigating how energy is used across their school. Working in inquiry teams, they gather and analyse data, identify areas for improvement, and design practical energy-saving actions. The project supports on Thinking, Participating and Contributing, and Science as a Human Endeavour. Through hands-on investigation, students turn data into meaningful action while building real-world STEM skills.

The Student-Led Energy Audit empowers learners to understand where electricity is used in their school and how behaviour and technology influence energy demand. Students take ownership of the investigation process — from data collection to community communication — while applying science and sustainability concepts in authentic contexts.

Learning Goals

By completing this course, students will:

  • Investigate how energy is consumed in their classroom, staffroom, or campus.
  • Use real tools to measure and record data about energy use.
  • Interpret findings to identify areas for improvement.
  • Communicate practical energy-saving strategies to the wider school community.

Course Structure

The programme includes three 30–40 minute sessions and optional extension activities for deeper exploration or long-term data monitoring.

Each session builds on the previous one, guiding students through a cycle of investigation, analysis, and action.

Session 1 – Investigate: Where Does Our Electricity Go?

Focus: Understanding how and where energy is used.

Learning Intentions:

  • Identify electrical appliances and their purpose.
  • Gather data on energy use across classrooms and shared spaces.
  • Develop observation and teamwork skills.

Activities:

  • Brainstorm what uses electricity in the school.
  • Survey classrooms and staff areas to create an Energy Inventory Table (device, wattage, hours used per day).
  • Discuss what surprised students about energy use patterns.

Curriculum Link: Gather and interpret data to identify energy use patterns.

Session 2 – Analyse: What Uses the Most Energy, and Why?

Focus: Testing predictions and analysing results.

Learning Intentions:

  • Use measurement tools to collect real evidence.
  • Compare assumptions with actual data.
  • Identify whether high use is due to device type or behaviour.

Activities:

  • Use the Energy Audit Kit to measure power use of selected appliances.
  • Record data and compare with Session 1 estimates.
  • Discuss: Is the energy use high because of the appliance or how we use it?
  • (Optional) Monitor energy use over 24 hours to collect extended data.

Curriculum Link: Use scientific tools and evidence to explain patterns and evaluate human impact.

Session 3 – Communicate & Act: Share What We’ve Learned

Focus: Turning findings into positive change.

Learning Intentions:

  • Communicate results effectively.
  • Develop an action plan or awareness campaign.
  • Engage the school community in energy-saving behaviours.

Activities:

  • Design posters, infographics, or digital reports sharing results.
  • Create a “Switch Off” or “Energy Smart” campaign.
  • Reflect on how actions reduce emissions and support school sustainability goals.

Curriculum Link: Communicate sustainability ideas and take informed action within the community.
